Download a book once, or just a section, and it plays with the screen locked and your phone in your pocket.
Watch the text scroll as it reads, tap any line to jump there, and drag to scrub through a chapter.
Adjustable speed, bookmarks, chapter list, in-book search, sleep timer, and lock-screen and AirPods controls.
Organize with shelves, sorting, and search. Freedio remembers your exact place in every book.
Add pronunciation overrides for characters and places the voice would otherwise stumble on.

Download a book for screen-off, in-pocket listening, fully offline. Your place is always saved.
Yes. Freedio is free, with no subscription and no ads. If it earns a place in your day, there is an optional tip you can leave as often as you like, but it unlocks nothing and is purely a thank-you.
Completely. The voice runs on your iPhone and Freedio makes no network calls. You can read on a plane or with no signal at all.
EPUB, PDF, and plain-text or Markdown files that you own. Add them from the Files app or the share sheet.
Those are locked with DRM by their stores and cannot be opened in any third-party app, including Freedio. Freedio reads DRM-free files you own, for example from Standard Ebooks, Project Gutenberg, Smashwords, or direct from publishers.
Freedio's voices currently speak English. It reads any English-language book beautifully; other languages are not supported yet.
No. No accounts, no analytics, no tracking. The books you add and your reading progress stay on your device. See the privacy policy below.
Freedio collects no data. The app runs entirely on your device and makes no network connections. There are no accounts, no analytics, no tracking, and no ads. The books you add and your reading progress stay on your device. Because Freedio collects nothing, there is nothing for us to store, share, sell, or delete.
Freedio offers optional tips through Apple's in-app purchase system. These payments are processed entirely by Apple under Apple's terms; Freedio never sees or stores your name, card, or any payment details.
If iOS or Apple's frameworks collect diagnostics at the system level, that is governed by Apple's privacy policy, not Freedio. Last updated May 2026.
Freedio is provided free of charge, for your personal use, on an "as is" basis without warranties of any kind. You are responsible for the files you add to the app and confirm you own them or otherwise have the right to use them. Freedio only opens files you provide and does not remove or circumvent any copy protection (DRM); books locked by a store cannot be opened.
Tips are optional in-app purchases that unlock no features and are simply a way to support development; you are welcome to leave one as often as you like. They are processed by Apple and are generally non-refundable; refund requests are handled by Apple.
To the extent permitted by law, Freedio and its developer are not liable for any damages arising from use of the app. Standard Apple Licensed Application terms also apply. Last updated May 2026.
